Module 12 - Special Educational Needs

Module Description
This module aims to facilitate teachers in acquiring an understanding of the key aspects of special education and using this understanding to inform their teaching.

Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the term Special Education.
  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the various types of learning difficulties- characteristics and associated relevant terminology.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the impact a learning difficulty can have on the pupil’s learning and development.
  • Reflect on one’s personal/professional attitude towards working with pupil with special education needs.
  • Use a range of teaching strategies for all learners including the pupil with special educational needs

Lectures/Workshops 20 hours
Student Work 40 hours
Student Assessment 40 hours

Student Work/Assessment Strategies

  • Complete the written observation record for one pupil whom the teacher has identified as experiencing difficulties in learning in the classroom.
  • Keep a record of a pupil’s involvement in one lesson per week for one term to include – a) the profile of the pupil b) evidence of pupil’s work – anecdotal and samples c) 4 lesson plans that incorporate the 4 learning strategies learned.

Students must be working within the local educational system.
